What is Orofacial Myology Therapy?

It is the study and treatment of oral and facial muscles as they relate to speech, dentition, chewing, swallowing, and overall mental and physical health. 

When is it time to contact a Speech-Language Pathologist?

If you or your child experiences one or more of the following:

  • TMJ Dysfunction
  • Mouth Breathing
  • "Tongue Tied"
  • Lisp
  • Tongue Thrust during swallowing or speaking
  • Has a frequent open-mouth resting posture with the lips parted and/or the tongue resting against the upper and/or lower teeth.
  • Thumb Sucking
  • Older than 4 years of age

Can all Speech-Language Pathologists do Orofacial Myology Therapy?

No, this is a specialty area of treatment. A Speech-Language Pathologist requires specialized post-graduate training in Orofacial Myology.

What would therapy entail?

  • One to two sessions per week
  • Each session includes teaching and practicing specific exercises necessary to achieve proper tongue placement
  • Individualized home programming created at the end of each session
